Sandman
I have this recurring nightmare that has been haunting me regularly since about ninth grade. It only rears its ugly head if I go several days with little to no sleep. The past few days have been late nights of homework and studying, with super early mornings.
In the dream (or nightmare as it should be called), I wake up to find myself lying on a cold, marble floor at the top of a long flight of stairs. The stairs, not steep at all, seem to go on indefinitely, descending into darkness. So I follow the stairs, down, down, down, all the way down. There's no railing and I frequently feel like I might stumble and plummet into the infinite black. It feels as though I have been walking for ages, when suddenly I reach the bottom and see before me a hall, though I do not know it's a hallway because it is in complete darkness.
I wrestle with my fear, eventually deciding to go on - regardless that I have zero visibility. A single light bulb dangling down from a wire flickers on suddenly and I flinch at the sudden glare of light. The bulb gives me momentary relief, but no reassurance, for it sheds no light upon the remainder of the hallway.
I keep walking further and further, when I feel a cold wind blow through. I can feel every hair on my arms standing on end and the goosebumps increasing. I get that uneasy feeling, knowing something unpleasant must be at the end.
Suddenly the corridor ends and I'm launched into daylight. The sun shines so brilliantly that I am blind for several seconds and I blink furiously in a desperate attempt to view my surroundings. I turn to look to my right and suddenly, I'm falling through the air with the ground rushing up to meet me.
Falling off the cliff isn't where the dream ends; the nightmare ends after I hit the rocks below. Most people wake up just as they're about to hit the rocks, jolting out of the terrible fate that awaits them at the bottom. I don't, however; I hit the rocks and I can literally feel the excruciating pain - so bad that I want to scream. But that's when I wake up...when the pain is so horrible and tormenting that my dream self passes out.
