Surprises

I was just leaving class yesterday when I got a call from the Panera boy I went out with a while back.  We had parted as friends a few weeks ago, agreeing that the chemistry just wasn't there between us.  The phone conversation went something like this:
Him: "Hi!"
Me: "Hi?"
Him: "How are you?"
Me: "I'm good. What's up?"
Him: "I'm here!  Where are you?"
Me: "I'm in the campus center...What do you mean, you're 'here'?"
Him: "I'm on your campus!"

I turned the corner and BAM!  He was standing before me, phone pressed against his ear.

We grabbed a cup of coffee and chatted.  We talk on a regular basis, but showing up suddenly is beyond abnormal for him and for our friendship.
He suddenly went horribly silent and I had a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach.  He said to me, "You know how we agreed that we should just be friends because we lacked chemistry?  Well, I lied.  I should have said something when we decided it, but I lied and I said I didn't have feelings for you because I knew you didn't want it.  But You're one of the best friends I've ever had and I feel like I've known you forever and I know you don't want a relationship but I really like you and I think I might even love you..."

     I just sat there.

I mean, what on earth do you say to that??!  Don't worry, I let him down gently.  Still, it was awkward and I felt terrible.  I hadn't told him I was seeing someone else because since we weren't dating anymore, I figured it wasn't really any of his business.

Speaking of whom, surprisingly the boy I'm currently dating was totally cool with it.  He didn't mind and told me he felt bad for the kid.  My friends are concerned I have a stalker on my hands, but my kind-of-boyfriend gets it.  He understands that it was a moment of impulse this other kid acted on and he (Surprise Kid a.k.a. Panera Boy) was more embarrassed than upset that I rejected his advances.
I honestly don't think he's a stalker or was trying to freak me out.  This kid is one of the best guys I've ever had the pleasure of meeting.  He's impulsive and completely naive which is how we ended up with him hunting me down at school.  He also left me hot chocolate at work the day after our first date and immediately asked me out on a second date only hours after the first.  I was freaked out at the whole situation but I'm once again in the awkward and sad position with a relationship ending plus losing a friend in the process.

This is why I do not date my best guy friends.  Even though this kid wasn't my friend first, I still somehow ended up here.
