Shh...
I have a secret... I'm kind of a secret nerd. Okay, maybe it's not such a secret. I love musical theater. I love Bernadette Peters and Julie Andrews and Barbara Streisand. I love 40's film musicals, with legends like Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor and Vera Ellen. I love Jane Austen; I could read Mansfield Park over and over. I'd much rather stay in and read than go to frat parties or get wasted at a club.
I like superheroes and comic books. I blame my best friend. I didn't want to read them, but he forced them upon me and now I'm hooked. I prefer man-made superheroes than ones with superpowers, i.e, Ironman, Batman, Robin... But my favorite is Green Arrow.
If you don't know anything about Green Arrow, here's the short version: He is an archer, dressed like Robin Hood, who invents trick arrows with various special functions. His secret identity is Oliver Queen, the arrogant, playboy billionaire of Star City (Think Bruce Wayne plus Tony Stark). He doesn't have any superpowers as previously mentioned, but he is excellent at archery, impressive athletic abilities, and advanced martial arts skills. Green Arrow has a strong moral code against outright killing and chooses to develop trick arrows to subdue or outwit opponents. His arrows do everything from standard pointed arrows to grappling lines and nets to flash bombs and tear gas.
I have mixed feelings about the new CW series, Arrow. It is loosely, and I mean VERY loosely, based on the original comics. Yes, the actor is very attractive (but not blonde - which I find irritating).
I'm worried messing with the story by trying to appeal to a broader demographic. I don't want them to ruin my favorite character or to give people the wrong idea about him, especially when most haven't even heard of him.
The writers gave a few nods to the comics: His sister Thea, nicknamed "Speedy" (the name of Green Arrow's sidekick) and his ex-girlfriend named Laurel, Green Arrow's lover, Black Canary. CW has revealed that other characters from DC Comics, such as Huntress and Deadshot, will also be appearing on the series.
I didn't bother to watch the whole episode, but so far I'm somewhat unimpressed. I didn't have very high expectations in the first place to be honest. Maybe I will give it a few more episodes. In retrospect, I might be a little bias; no mortal man will ever live up to the Oliver Queen in my head.
