Red
"All the different emotions that are written about on this album are all pretty much about the kind of tumultuous, crazy, insane, intense, semi-toxic relationships that I’ve experienced in the last two years. All those emotions — spanning from intense love, intense frustration, jealousy, confusion, all of that — in my mind, all those emotions are red. You know, there’s nothing in between. There’s nothing beige about any of those feelings."
When Taylor Swift says things like this, I'm always in awe. When she writes lyrics like: "And I know it's long gone, and there was nothing else I could do And I forget about you long enough to forget why I needed to" (from "All Too Well"), I know that she gets what I feel. I don't know how she does it but she somehow manages to put it all into words. Feelings and emotions - she's right, they ARE red. There is definitely nothing "beige" about those kinds of feelings.
I know that Taylor isn't exactly everyone's cup of tea and her new album has received a lot of criticism from fans for being "too different" from her past work. I personally like that she's branching out a little, while still staying true to her country-pop-rock roots with songs that are all about men, mistakes, growing up and feelings that are hard to describe. She is one of my guilty pleasures, along with the Glee cast and One Direction.
I've had the entire album from the moment it was released on iTunes but I've had "Red" on repeat for the past few days. I don't know what it is about it, whether it's the upbeat, catchiness of it or the lyrics that speak to me. I know I can always count on her music when I'm in a specific mood. I listen and I say, "That's EXACTLY how I'm feeling!" I think her music and music in general does that for a lot of people, which is one of the reasons I love music as much as I do.
"Red"
Loving him is like driving a new Maserati down a dead end street
Faster than the wind
Passionate as sin, ended so suddenly
Loving him is like trying to change your mind
Once you're already flying through the free fall
Like the colors in autumn
So bright just before they lose it all
Losing him was blue like I'd never known
Missing him was dark grey all alone
Forgetting him was like trying to know somebody you've never met
But loving him was red
Loving him was red
Touching him is like realizing all you ever wanted was right there in front of you
Memorizing him was as easy as knowing all the words to your old favorite song
Fighting with him was like trying to solve a crossword and realizing there's no right answer
Regretting him was like wishing you never found out love could be that strong
Losing him was blue like I'd never known
Missing him was dark grey all alone
Forgetting him was like trying to know somebody you've never met
But loving him was red
Oh red burning red
Remembering him comes in flashbacks and echoes
Tell myself it's time now, gotta let go
But moving on from him is impossible
When I still see it all in my head
Burning red!
Darling it was red!
Oh, losing him was blue like I'd never known
Missing him was dark grey all alone
Forgetting him was like trying to know somebody you've never met
'Cause loving him was red yeah yeah red
We're burning red
And that's why he's spinning round in my head
Comes back to me burning red
Yeah yeah
'Cause love was like driving a new Maserati down a dead end street
