Harvey

I CANNOT stop raving about my school's production of "Harvey"!  I keep telling everyone I see and babbling about it via Facebook.  My mom and I almost didn't get tickets but luckily some people didn't show up to claim theirs so we got seats!  My school does this really great thing where for small productions, they literally put the audience in the play.  The seating is onstage, which puts you up close and personal.  The actors are so close that it makes the setting extremely intimate.
If you've never seen the 1950 film starring James Stewart, it is the story of a man named Elwood with a best friend named Harvey.  Harvey isn't just a friend though, he's a imaginary.  Harvey is a pooka - a mischievous spirit from Irish folklore, in the form of a six-foot tall white rabbit.  Elwood lives with his sister Veta Simmons and her daughter, Myrtle May, both of whom are very concerned with their place in society and the impression Elwood gives.  Elwood spends most of his time in bars, introducing Harvey to strangers.  Things get complicated when Veta attempts to have Elwood committed to a sanitarium and people begin to wonder if Harvey truly is imaginary.
My friend James played Elwood to a tee.  He played the naive, happy-go-lucky man incredibly.  He came across as kind and generous, as Elwood is truly meant to be played.  My other friend Steph, who has always had a flair for the dramatics, was wonderful as Veta.  She was not only overdramatic, but funny and loving toward her brother.  My mom and I laughed, I cried at one point, and the cast got a standing ovation.  It was truly one of the best productions I've ever seen!  I may be slightly biased because two of my good friends were the leads, but the play moved at a really good pace.  The humor and timing were both spot on and the characters were lovable and hilarious!  I wish I could have gone to see it again because I would have, without hesitation.
