O Captain! My Captain!
Dr. James Crowley is truly one of the greatest professors I've ever had. His Major British Writers I class is usually the highlight of my Tuesdays and Thursdays. He's a bit like a bulldog (as previously described), what with quivering jowls and low growls. He's the type who gets so passionate that he spits on the front row, which I usually happen to be sitting in. He's the type to get in your face to make a point. His classes do have a mandatory attendance policy and he demands a lot. He's a stiff man and a tough professor, but not unreasonable. I never leave his class without having learned something new. For example, I learned the other day that Robin Williams observed one of Crowley's classes and used him as part of his inspiration for his role of John Keating in Dead Poets Society. How crazy is that??!
I had his midterm today on Old English literature and Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales" (which is technically Middle English). There were a lot of Latin terms that I had to study but overall I knew pretty much everything on the test. At least my studying didn't go to waste! I am sure I got one term identification wrong, but they are only worth two points each, so I'm not overly concerned. I'm much more worried about the exemplification section with three questions worth twenty points a piece! I'm worried that I didn't write enough...
My American Lit midterm didn't quite go as well. There were a bunch of multiple choice questions I didn't know the answers to, my identification of passages were okay but not great, and I wrote my essay in exactly thirty five minutes.
I caved and skipped my Writing About Literature and Biology classes. It was hailing ice pellets in my face, I was tired and hungry, cold and wet. Plus, I have to work tonight from nine until two in the morning doing inventory. I have to also drive there and back in the snow and sleet so I think it was justified that I skipped. The way this "spring" break is shaping up, it doesn't look like it's going to be very good. At least I'll get some rest though!
