Hit List
I used to love Smash. The concept of Smash was so unique that I knew I would love it the moment I heard about it. Mini recap of Season one: Smash is about a Broadway writing team come up with the idea of a new musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. The show is christened "Bombshell" and the duel for the lead diva begins. Ivy Lynn, played Megan Hilty is initially cast as Marilyn but ends up competing with talented, but naive ensemble member Karen Cartwright (Katherine McPhee). There's adultery, seduction, music, dance, heartbreak - all the usual.
Season two opens as "Bombshell" works to open on Broadway, but the show runs into legal and creative troubles. With the future of "Bombshell" looking rocky, the cast looks for other work; Karen meets Kyle, a stage writer, and his brother-like friend Jimmy, a composer. The boys are developing a musical about a rich girl who has a one night stand with a young, aspiring songwriter and steals her lover's songs, only to become a rockstar. The girl becomes a junkie for his songs, and even though the boy knows it's destructive, he continues writing songs for her. The show is named "Hit List" and Karen works to try to get their work noticed, especially by Derek. Derek works with Broadway star Veronica Moore (played by Jennifer Hudson) and helps her establish herself as a grown woman, not as the child star she once was.
Lately Smash has become somewhat like Glee in that I watch for the songs and the musical numbers, not caring at all about the dramatics of the show. The music that comes out of those shows are amazing, even if the acting and story lines have gone a bit dry. Season one got a little stale around the middle (post-Bernadette Peters' performance and during Uma Thurman's appearance). I stuck with it and I'm glad I did so. There are rumors about Smash being cancelled, which would be a little bit of a pity. I am a loyal and dedicated fan and will continue to watch it, even if I don't like where the story is headed. I have hope for the future.
Smash has had some truly incredible music come out of it, specifically the original songs. There are is usually at least one new song each week that I become obsessed with. We're talking: playing it in the car, singing it in the shower, on repeat while I study... A few weeks ago it was "I Can't Let Go", performed by Jennifer Hudson. Jimmy writes the song for Veronica's breakout concert and the song goes over well, finally getting the ambitious young men some recognition. Reasons I am obsessed: First off, it was Jennifer Hudson. This song was old school, big bang Broadway ballad but with a fresh twist. Perfection.
"Caught in the Storm" performed by Katherine McPhee was actually from the second episode of the season, which aired several weeks ago. I rediscovered it when my iTunes shuffled to it and I was shocked I had forgotten it! It's on repeat right now and if I was still performing, this would be my song!!

"I Can't Let Go"
Last week's episode had the showstopper "Heart Shaped Wreckage" (Katherine McPhee and Jeremy Jordan). This song, performed by Karen and Jimmy, is sung at the end of Act I of "Hit List". Karen has gotten herself totally wrapped up in this project, which is definitely starting to conflict with "Bombshell". Most likely, this will lead to some truly difficult choices.
