Life is Funny
It's funny how things turn out. There was once this girl named Leah*, whom I was best friends with sixth or seventh grade. We were constantly together, talking on the phone as only middle schoolers could. Her favorite animal was horses and we loved Boy Meets World.
We spent the better half of high school in parallel but separate worlds. We somehow managed to never have a class together until our senior year. Though we were friendly in our classes and in drama club rehearsal, it was always very poignant that we were not quite friends. When we began college our freshman year, we still remained in our designated universes. Our mutual friend, Jeff*, convinced us to hang out as a group of three one night. I had spent weeks protesting because I was afraid it was going to be awkward. It was awkward, at first, but by the end of the night, Leah and I couldn't stop talking to each other and Jeff was the odd one out.
Jeff had developed a crush on Leah our senior year of high school, which continued on through college. He couldn't accept that his feelings were unrequited so he kept pushing to see how far Leah would let him get. He didn't get far; Leah freaked and quickly cut all ties. I must admit, I disliked her somewhat for doing that but at the time, I didn't understand what Jeff was like or had done. Long story short, the less time Jeff spent with Leah, the more time he spent with me until eventually he and Leah were no longer speaking, and Jeff and I became inseparable. Things got complicated after that, as things always do. That's an ordeal and a half to be discussed at another time though.
Fast forward to today: Neither of us are friends with Jeff anymore; I haven't spoke to Jeff in over six months. Leah and I are best friends, we talk almost constantly. We watch Dexter and American Horror Story, we love the beach and Chipotle, we talk about boys, books and clothes. It's just...funny how strange things happen, how unexpected life can be.
