Monday Nights
Monday nights are Bunheads Night. My mom and I curl up with our cups of tea and watch Bunheads on ABC Family at nine. If you've never seen the show, it's a comedy-drama series created by Amy Sherman-Palladino (the creator of Gilmore Girls). Sutton Foster stars as Michelle Simms, a former ballerina "bunhead" who ended up a Las Vegas showgirl and the object of a persistent but sweet admirer, Hubbell. One night she impulsively takes up Hubbell's offer of marriage and moves to his sleepy coastal hometown in Southern California. In a sudden turn of events, Michelle winds up teaching alongside her mother-in-law, Fanny, at her ballet school.
If you were a Gilmore Girls fan, I recommend you watch Bunheads. It's not quite the same caliber as Gilmore Girls, but Sutton Foster's snappy one-liners and witty banter are totally Lorelai and Rory-esque. Little gems like this are my favorite: "You know how in a fairytale there's a bridge that leads to a castle, where there's a beautiful princess locked in a tower but there's a crazy little troll that lives under the bridge and in order to rescue the princess you have to deal with the troll? Welcome to Sparkles where the motto is 'If you're a princess, you're screwed'.
It's not a very complicated show, like Revenge where you have to watch every second or you miss something important. You do miss some some funny moments though. I also recommend you start from season one (we're only on season two), because some major stuff happens in the pilot episode.
This is not a show about ballet or dancing, really. In fact, there's less dancing in this show than there are gymnastics in Make It or Break It. It's about Michelle finding her way in this new foreign life that was thrust upon her. It's also about Michelle's young students. There are four main girls: the tall, fierce Melanie, cold, bratty Sasha, petitie but fiesty Ginny, and sweet Bettina "Boo". These girls are all facing the pressures of growing up while still trying to meet the expectations set upon them by their rigorous ballet training.
Sutton Foster is a Broadway legend in her own right (two time Tony Award-winning for her lead roles in Anything Goes and Thoroughly Modern Millie, not to mention starring in Little Women, The Drowsy Chaperone, Young Frankenstein and Shrek the Musical). I'm an enormous Sutton Foster fan and I knew immediately that I would love this show. A show about dancers plus Sutton Foster, written by the creator of Gilmore Girls?? It has my name ALL over it!
Next week will be the winter finale so if you have some free time, it would be a quite opportune time to start catching up! It's cutesy and light - perfect for curing the winter blues!
